CHARACTER
NAME: Maria
CANON: Maria the Virgin Witch
CANON POINT: post-episode 8
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND: wiki page.

PERSONALITY: Maria has, first and foremost, a fiery heart. She's wildly passionate about what she believes in and lives every day led by this philosophy. She could more easily live a simple life providing medicines and other things to nearby villages, but she chooses to go all out, not only doing that, but trying to end wars on her own, using her magic.

She's incredibly straightforward because of this, and rarely doubts herself. Much of the time, her motives and actions can easily be predicted by other characters, as they know exactly what she wants to do and that she'll always be found doing it. She lives her life day to day, only thinking about the here-and-now, so there's little room for doubt or thinking of other things. She devotes herself fully to her cause — helping others and ending bloodshed. She can most often be found preparing medicines for people who need them (and will accept them from a witch), or flying right into the heart of a battlefield to summon a giant monster to scare the soldiers off and end the fighting for the day.

However, this ends up in her being very near-sighted. She believes that if she can just end a battle, people can go home and be happy. And while that's true for the present, those people will again be sent out to fight a week later, and ending one battle by forcing people to leave the battlefield isn't going to solve the entire war. She's quite naive of how the world works, so she never even thinks of that, or of all the people losing money from the war, or the taxes covering it, or anything like that. She only thinks of it in the most simplistic of ways, which causes many people to foster hatred toward her. Many know that if she'd stop interfering, the war could come to an eventual conclusion, and almost does, but her desire to protect people and end the needless dying is too strong for her to ignore.

She's idealistic and believes that if she just keeps going and does her best, things will work out. But she's forced to doubt her thoughts and desires when she begins to realize that people really do resent her, despite her good intentions. And when someone she loves asks her to allow the war to continue to its natural conclusion, she has to think even further about it, feeling almost betrayed by him for being forced to stand idly by as something so upsetting continues on. As it turns out, she's still incapable of doing that, and ends up interfering regardless, which ends in divine punishment from the heavens being enacted against her, as she'd been warned about her interference already before.

She cares a great deal about others, oftentimes at the cost of her own happiness, as is evidenced by her need to constantly try to save them. Even when she's shunned, she'll try to help. There was once a village overcome by a plague, and though she'd tried to help bring them her medicine to cure them, she'd been shunned due to being a witch. In the time period she lives in, within France, the people are extremely devoted to their religion, so a witch like her is commonly branded a heretic and ignored by the people. That village's story ended in the death of its people, which greatly hurt Maria, and she still brings flowers to spread over it, despite the hate she received from them. However, she still has a few people who openly speak with her, and actually like her, which she appreciates immensely. She goes out of her way to be especially protective over them, as she loves them dearly.

Along the lines of her relationships with other people, it's important to mention her extreme aversion to sexual or even romantic actions. As the title of her canon suggests, she's a virgin, which hadn't particularly bothered her before (though she's always teased by her succubus familiar), but it bothers her greatly when the heavens decrees that should she ever lose her virginity, she will also lose her magical powers. She's upset over this, but she's no where near losing it anyway — she loses her mind over someone simply kissing her hand, or acting romantic toward her in any way. She takes any act along those lines very seriously. Considering those things never happen to her, it's a big deal to her, and not something she knows how to deal with gracefully. And due to being a virgin, she has no concept of what male genitalia looks like, thus when she creates an incubus familiar, she's unable to give him... what he needs, much to his frustration.

Maria has a terrible relationship with the church, obviously due to being a witch. Though it's not that she doesn't believe in it — she knows full well those heavenly beings spoken of are genuinely real (it was Saint Michael who forced the virginity vs magical power issue on her, and also forbid her from using her magic to interfere in things, though she finds ways around that). It's because she doesn't need any of that stuff, and honestly thinks a lot of its figures are jerks. She refuses to go along with any of it.

She can be quite cunning in how she gets around things, though. After being told by Ezekiel, Michael's proxy in watching over Maria, that he can't be watching her 24/7, she takes that to mean that as long as Ezekiel isn't watching then, she can use magic to interfere as much as she wants. Which begins a slew of situations where she has people blind Ezekiel in various ways so she can go about her business interfering in things.

All in all, Maria is someone who moves to the beat of her own drum. Though what she's not quite aware of herself yet, is that a large part of what she does is because she just wants to be loved and for people to understand each other. She's always hated bloodshed and done her part to stop it, but she's never quite stopped to wonder why. She's lost on why she thinks what she does, but for now, what she does understand is that the people who love her are very important to her, as she's experienced that very little in life, and she'll do anything to help them.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Wiki page!. It'd be best to nerf her summoning powers and make her only be able to summon 5-foot tall versions of the monsters, no bigger. Also, I'd like to take away her ability to create familiars, considering that's essentially creating a whole other human character on a whim.

INVENTORY: Her staff, her cauldron, Dragon summon, Taranis summon, Cyclops summon, and her Graoully summon.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis
